In 1950, the great Scottish American preacher Peter Marshall stood before the United States Senate and he explained it this way:




The modern challenge to motherhood is the eternal challenge — that of being a godly woman. The very phrase sounds strange in our ears. We never hear it now. We hear about every other kind of women — beautiful women, smart women, sophisticated women, career woman, talented women, divorced women, but so seldom do we hear of a godly woman — or of a godly man either, for that matter.


I believe women come nearer fulfilling their God-given function in the home than anywhere else. It is a much nobler thing to be a good wife than to be Miss America. It is a greater achievement to establish a Christian home than it is to produce a second-rate novel filled with filth. It is a far, far better thing in the realm of morals to be old-fashioned than to be ultramodern. The world has enough women who know how to hold their cocktails, who have lost all their illusions and their faith. The world has enough women who know how to be smart.


It needs women who are willing to be simple. The world has enough women who know how to be brilliant. It needs some who will be brave. The world has enough women who are popular. It needs more who are pure. We need women, and men, too, who would rather be morally right than socially correct.

New year and a new me!

I have been very quiet as of late, in more ways than one.  I have been recuperating from surgery and doing my best to seek God's will in every area of my life with the times that I have been quiet before Him. 

He has been prompting me to work on my physical and spiritual sides of my life.  He has also brought some resources in to my path within the last few days that He has prompted me to use as direction:

Pulling back and reevaluating my online presence. . . albeit how small it is! :-)


I have really felt the LORD challenging me lately to consider how I am spending my time, especially as it pertains to me in my online time spent reading/reading blogs and catching up with friends and family on Facebook. I am trying to do all of this in addition to my FT work (online), FT homeschooling (PT books/PT online), and email time and responsibilties (online). My computer(s) are on and running almost all day and evening because of my work, and that makes it easy to be hopping from place to place as a distraction from working when I need to take a "break" like most people get in the outside working world.

Hopping from place to place and checking in with email and Facebook for instance make me feel connected to adults as I work at home FT and homeschool my kids at home FT. I am starting to see how much of a distraction it is becoming to me though. I am not seeing how I am best using my time with such a lack of structure as I start something and then hop online to check in, finish something for work, help a child with a school issue, clean the breakfast dishes, etc. I am trying to do too many things at the same time. I am a great multitasker and list maker, so things get accomplished every day. . . but I am not sure if I am fully engaged in what I do when I am doing it. That is making me feel disjointed for some reason and I am desiring to make things more streamlined and organized, even though I like having my "freedom" in that area. It's awesome being able to work from home and homeschool - - but what a challenge for me in time management!

I have also been feeling that God is telling me to pull back and not have so many irons in the fire and so much information floating aroung the 'net that I am responsible for keeping safe and/or monitored. I prayed about it and He told me to make all of my blogs private, other than this one and my (other neglected) cooking blog! I have also been feeling a check in my spirit with sharing too many pictures on FB/other places as I have made more connections there too. In some ways I feel like I am drawing a hedge of protection around my family. It seems extreme, but God wouldn't let me rest until I made some changes last night. (I am not implying or even suggesting that everyone do this, but for some reason, God is having me do this for my family, and like everything, seek the Lord for what to do for you and your family. He knows best.)

This is another shocking thing that I have found myself doing lately, at God's leading. I have felt His Spirit showing me that I am looking at other blogs for inspiration and ideas, and after reading them, I am clicking away with a feeling of condemnation or inadequacy at what I am not doing "right" rather than taking the "meat" of what I am reading, letting the words I have read inspire me, but then spitting out the bones of what will not work for me, so to speak. I have spent more time reading them than reading the Word of God and looking to it as my yardstick for my marriage, mothering, homemaking and homeschooling lately. I desire to change that!

Now there is nothing wrong with reading blogs, looking for ideas and inspiration online, and sharing in fellowship with other women. I am a WAH/SAH mom and need adult interaction, badly! BUT, everything I read and see on other blogs that work for other women and their families will not work for me. I am following the LORD as they follow the LORD, and our walks both glorify God, but we each have different steps that we take in our personal walks with God. All of us are unique and called into different areas of ministry (while still being home and family centered), and as long as we seek to serve and glorify the LORD in all that we do, He will lead and guide us into His perfect will for our lives. The fact that I can't dedicate myself 100% to FT homemaking and homeschooling because I also work at home FT does not make me less than God's chosen one to live this (crazy, blessed, tiring, amazing) life that He has chosen for me.

There I said it, and that wasn't easy!

I am making a renewed committment to pray and read the Word first rather than log on to the 'net in the mornings. I am always trying to take advantage of time to complete some of my work tasks ASAP, but I am feeling like my time could be more of a blessing to myself and others spent doing something else first, like spending time with God and more quality time with my kids before we start school.

Since this is a day of sharing what is on my heart, I have recently also come to the realization that my photography business is not meant to make me famous, admired, or bring me money enough to quit my "day" job, although that would be nice, in some ways anyway. God blessed me with a camera (that is broken right now:-() to be a blessing to others. I have always felt that way from day one, even with others thinking that doing photography as a ministry is so strange! Why don't I advertise and promote myself? The LORD knows my heart and will open the doors and give us the means to fix my camera when the time is right. I can praise God even in the midst of having a broken camera! AMEN!

I am not sure how many people read my blog, but I thought that I would share some of these things that are on my heart. I hope to continue reading blogs that are encouraging to me as I have time and blogging as I have time, perhaps once a week. I also need to work with my web-developer to tweak some things on my photography website to reflect my change in perspective. . . .

A Wise Woman Builds Her Home


I haven't had much time for blogging or reading blogs (or email for that matter) this summer. Time passes so quickly and it goes by faster the older I get, it seems.

My heart has been encouraged and inspired (convicted really) by reading Mrs. June's blog, A Wise Woman Builds Her Home. Her blog always strikes a chord with me in my walk with God.

She is doing a series on Motherhood May these posts touch your heart and inspire you to become the woman/wife/mother God wants you to be.

I am making a public confession here to say that I am not seeking the Scriptures as much as I have been reading books and listening to "experts" to give me help and tips raising my kids. I have been praying for HELP in the middle of a crisis, rather than preparing the way by earnest prayer and intercession for my children.

As silly as it sounds, each of my kids has me scratching my head and wondering what to do about different things right now. Isn't that how God keeps us hungry for HIS wisdom?


LORD - I make a renewed commitment to YOU to seek YOUR wisdom in all things, especially with my children. I seek to glorify you in every word I speak, every decision I make, and every action I model for these three precious souls.

May I love their father as you would have me. May I respect and honor him as the head of our home, and, when they look at me, may they see your model of a Christian wife and mother. May my daughters be able to see Biblical Womanhood in action that will someday provide the encouragement and model they will need to live their lives. May my son see me as one worthy of being called a Lady and may I teach him how to live his life as one who is a mightly warrior of the LORD.

May my life make them hungry for you and desire to give their hearts to you early and forever. What an awesome blessing and responsibility I have to love and teach these sweet, precious ones about You. May your wisdom, peace, and joy rule in my heart and guide my footsteps as I seek to serve You by serving my family.

Hoping to get more blogging time. . . .

One day not too long ago I was struggling with the boys over some minor details which come up when a lot of people live in a small shack in the woods. Details like the value of picking one’s dirty clothes up off of the living room floor when company has been spotted driving up the mountain. The boys were unusually stubborn that particular day. Rather than fight with them over their household responsibilities I picked up the dirty clothes myself and crammed them into the washing machine. I ran some soapy water in the sink to get a start on the dishes before the company arrived.

Now usually I am not one to hold a grudge over small disagreements like laundry on the living room floor. This one settled in my brain though, and I felt compelled to mull over it for several days. It was the outright insubordination which offended me the most. After I figured that out I went in search of solutions.

About the same time I was in the process of Spring Cleaning. I was having a great deal of trouble motivating myself to wash the walls in the kitchen and mop the back porch where the cats live (blessedly with a doggie door so they don’t need litter boxes).

Well, the more I worried about these twin dilemmas the more I felt the need to discuss them with the queen of solutions, my momma Darthulia. As I suspected she had the perfect solution. Darthulia told me I needed a uniform or costume which would reassure myself and others of my intention and status in the home. She claimed it would remind me of my duties, inspire me to greater levels of cleanliness (which as a hillbilly I sorely need), and reaffirm my authority in the home.

Darthulia then went on to describe the homemaker’s uniform to me in detail. “Imagine the modern archetype of the housewife.” She began. “Think Donna Reed, or Beaver Cleaver’s mom. They wore full skirts, and stockings, and heels when they vacuumed. But you knew they were doing housework because they had their aprons on. A string of beads graced the necks of their classic shirtwaist dresses, and a lacy bibbed apron proclaimed their role as matriarch in charge of household management.”

I only have a fleeting memory of Donna Reed. I sort of wish she came on television regularly so I could take notes but she doesn’t in my area so I am stuck looking for other heroines-of-the-home to model myself after. Most of what momma said made sense to me though. That very day, I put on a full skirt, stockings, sensibly low high heeled shoes, and a string of pearly white beads. Then I sat down at my sewing machine and ran up a couple of bibbed aprons, decorated with lace and ribbons.


I made up the pattern as I went along using a small rectangle for the first bib and a heart shape for the second bib. Then I stitched lace around the edges of the bib and attatched it to a simple tie with a full apron skirt gathered to the waist. I made them short waisted so they would fit my maternal figure a bit better, and voila, I was set. I put the first apron on, a creamy white or ecru, and looked in the mirror to admire my handiwork. I expected to see myself staring back at me, probably looking a little silly in this frilly piece of confection designed to protect my clothing.

Boy howdy, was I in for a surprise. In the mirror I saw a vision of the homemaker I have always strived to become staring back at me. Her cheery face glistened in the sunshine. Her hair tied up neatly in bun looked authoritative, and compassionate all at the same time. The apron covered several figure flaws and accentuated the fertile curves of the woman I saw in the mirror. This woman had purpose. She had status. She had clout. I stood there, contemplating the wonder of the homemaker that shone through my image in the mirror. “This is who I want to be” I told myself. “This is the Keeper of the home, with a capital ‘K’. ”

I wear my aprons every day now. I have made more, in different colors and configurations so as to be pleasing to my senses. I have come to believe they are a like lacy bits of lingerie, only worn on the outside, and a quite a bit more respectable. When I put on my aprons the children mind me better, wandering visitors immediately know my role as a stay at home mom. Door to door religious missionaries assume I am a virtuous woman and cheerfully move on to the next house. Fred thinks I look cute as a button, and neighbor children hug me more often.

I like my aprons. They have changed my life, raising my standards, inspiring me to greater feats of home making skill, and making me more effective as a parent. Whoever thought that a dollars worth of fabric and lace could effect so many changes on one woman and one family? Since my success with aprons I have become a true believer. I am now called to spread the word among my fellow housewives. Join the crusade by sharing your love of aprons with friends, family and internet buddies around the world. Random things about me:


1. I have always wanted to have been born in another time. Seriously. I would have endured the hardships to have been living in the time of chivalry, aprons, and long dresses.

2. I truly love being a homemaker, mom and wife; I wish I could get paid to give 100% of myself into it and not have to have an outside paying job.

3. There is nothing that makes me happier than being at home. Yes, sappy perhaps, but true.

4. Until today, making homemade bread was one of my goals. I am happy to say that I achieved making a loaf rather than a brick!

5. I used to be a type-A, perfectionist, overachiever, etc.. . . . and then I had my first child. I learned to let go and enjoy life. Seeing the "chaos" around me in my home proves that I have leared to embrace the moment and make memories rather than to-do lists.

6. My childhood dreams were to be a wife/mom, teacher, singer, and author. I have "achieved" the first three, and there is still time for number 4 - but, in the meantime, I am investing my time and efforts into teaching and loving my children and cherishing my husband and our marriage. They are my living destiny.

7. For fun, here is number seven: My husband didn't kiss me until we were pronounced man and wife! This was after he courted me for six months and asked my father for my hand. God has sent me a well-mannered gentleman who treats me as his lady. I am truly blessed beyond measure.

Starting the homeschool train!

We are so loving this homeschooling thing. Since making the decision to jump off of the treadmill of "normal life and expectations" a few weeks ago, our stress level as a family, and mine as the mother, has lowered tremendously.

That seems like an impossibility since I have taken on MORE responsibility and have less free time being a full time wife, mother, homemaker, homeschooler, and teacher of 100+ online students. . . but I think I have a peace in knowing that I have made the best decision for our family and I LOVE what I am doing every day. I love having my kids home with me and I feel blessed being able to invest the best of myself into them all the time.

Don't get me wrong - things aren't rosy and perfect, and we are not all beautifully living in harmony 24/7, but we are growing together as a family - and I am loving that so much!

I wish that I had more time to share what has been happening - but I am especially thankful for being given this chance to homeschool and wanted to share this as a "thankful " post. I don't take one minute for granted!

From a light-hearted post to a heavy one. . . .



I haven't written much by way of response to the election; I have been processing it for a few days and been too busy to post. Usually my blogs don't delve into controversial topics, but I was reading a blog written by my friend Trista, that really opened the floodgates of emotions for me.

I am including my comment left on her blog below since I really shared my heart - and I felt like I could also share it here. You don't have to comment, but if you decide to, please remember to be respectful and aware that I have sensitive people who also read my blog. Thank you.



Trista - You have hit a nerve with me today and have really encouraged me to speak out on a topic that is near and dear to my heart - for many reasons.

I have never been able to understand the "logic" of a profession that will take any step possible to protect and *save the life of an unborn BABY* (prescribe medications to save a pregnancy/administer NICU procedures to keep a preemie alive/perform life-saving surgeries in and out of the uterus, etc.) - and then on the other extreme do whatever it takes to ENCOURAGE and snuff out another life (or as these precious babies are also called, "the products of conception") *at the same level of development* - My mind cannot comprehend what these doctors, nurses, and other professionals are thinking. I also can't understand how much they may be motivated by *money* to murder rather than save lives.

I know that they are motivated to save or not save life based on many factors - such as the wishes and viewpoints of the parents about the pregnancy for example- but how can they not see the lack of consistency on their part? Is all truth relative? Is there such a thing as truth anymore?




Having a special needs child is life-altering; dealing with an unplanned pregnancy, carrying and then delivering a baby may not be in someone's plans; multiples are risky - - - but life is worth saving, no matter the cost. Of course that is my conviction, but I have had to talk this walk myself on some level or another and I don't regret choosing life.

I read something the other day talking about how many famous and note-worthy people would have been aborted for convenience sake if it had been legal in that time of history. Beethoven was an example. (Where would this world be without his music?!?!?!) My mind reels thinking of so many potential lives that have been needlessly sacrificed on the altar of abortion. I know a couple who 3 months before their large Catholic wedding made a decision that haunts them to this day. . . . Both of them live with such regret to this day knowing that they cared more about their reputations than their firstborn child.



I have also been through a D&C for a miscarriage - and I am so haunted by the procedure myself, even after almost seven years. The impact on a woman's mind and emotions, not only her body, is beyond words. My heart aches for women who have undergone this procedure and for their precious children taken so soon. . . . vacuumed and scraped from the "safe" place in their mommy.

I am rambling here, but this post made me realize I am also mourning the election of a man who will not seek to protect the lives of all Americans - born and unborn - I literally get chills thinking about the policies he will set into place that will not encourage taking responsibility for our actions or providing incentives to place these beautiful children with potential adoptive couples longing for the child they can never have. . . . The lists of these parents are MILES LONG!



The children aborted since the 70's would be here now working and helping to save the Social Security crisis - another weird fact, but as a politician, he might appreciate that. So much potential for life and creativity that only God knows the depth of has been taken from our society before it was time. . . .

I am not bittered but broken in my spirit that our future president is not Pro-life. I will be praying for him and the others who have the power in this country to reverse our very own Silent Holocaust taking place every day in clinics and hospitals around the country.

Thank you Trista for taking a stand for life. I am taking your hand and professing that I am with you in praying for and respecting our new President as our leader, but all the while praying and beseeching God to spare our unborn children.

God have mercy on us if we remain silent.
